The Information Department Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) was initially established in 2012 as the Information Cell Gilgit-Baltistan, a development project under the S&GAD Cabinet Department GB. This initiative began with the hiring of a Deputy Director, an Assistant Director, and allied staff to manage the publicity affairs of the provincial government of Gilgit-Baltistan. In August 2017, the Information Cell was elevated to an independent department. Mr. Fida Hussain was appointed as the first Secretary of the Information Department for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, marking a significant milestone in the department's history. During the 2018-2019 period, the department prepared the first-ever provincial policy titled the "GB Advertisement Policy 2018." This comprehensive policy was approved by the Gilgit-Baltistan Cabinet and subsequently notified and promulgated in February 2019. The policy regulates the mechanism of publication and payment of public sector advertisements on behalf of all departments and their subordinate offices within the Gilgit-Baltistan Government. Under the supervision and guidance of the current Secretary Information Mr. Mir Waqar Ahmed, the Information Department GB has made substantial advancements. The department now includes a Directorate of Information situated in Gilgit-Baltistan, with additional offices being established in the Diamer and Baltistan divisions. The current human resources of the Directorate are housed in a state-of the-art, purpose-built building. Furthermore, a fully functional Digital Media Studio is soon to be launched, capable of producing content for digital and mainstream news and current affairs channels. The Information Department GB is committed to managing the publicity matters of the provincial government. It leads various campaigns to promote development activities, educational, cultural, and sports events taking place across Gilgit-Baltistan. Additionally, the department plays a crucial role in promoting the unexplored and untapped tourism potential of the region, as Gilgit-Baltistan is renowned as the Jewel of Pakistan.
